Contraceptives and mental health

Most of the time, birth control methods such as pills, injections, patches and implants don’t disrupt women’s moods. In fact, they may indirectly improve mental health by preventing unwanted pregnancies or by reducing bothersome menstrual symptoms. Yet some women experience a depressed mood, irritability or anxiety after starting hormonal contraceptives (birth control methods that contain hormones).

If you’re having these reactions, there are solutions. Consider speaking with your primary care provider or mental health clinician about assessment and treatment options.
